Standardized patients (SPs) can be requested for in-person and/or virtual sessions in a variety of formats.

  • Learners can interact with SPs one-on-one (usually for evaluative purposes), individually with peer observers or conduct a group interview with the SP.
  • Hybrid simulations and physical examinations are more appropriate for in-person sessions.
  • Scenarios focusing on learners’ interviewing, history taking and communication skills, as well as other skillsets (e.g., establishing rapport and exhibiting empathy), can be effectively accomplished via in-person or virtual SP interactions.
  • Virtual simulations occur through a videoconferencing platform, such as Zoom.
  • SP Trainers are available to provide guidance on developing and adapting cases to suit a virtual delivery.
