Virtual Simulation

The Covid-19 pandemic, and subsequent lockdowns, created a unique challenge for theatre-based simulation operations in the Centre for Simulation-Based Learning (CSBL). There was an emerging need for converting traditional in-person simulation to a virtual platform, so learners could engage in this type of training activity remotely. After adapting experience from other simulation centres and using the CSBL existing video viewing infrastructure, the simulation team developed a virtual simulation platform for Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) healthcare programs.

The new virtual platform involved two-three simulation technical personnel controlling a manikin and acting as room confederate(s) (e.g., nurse, respiratory therapist, etc.) in one of the theatre-based simulation suites. The overview of the room, from the video system, was broadcast to learners via Zoom’s share screen feature allowing learners to interact with the manikin (patient) and confederate(s) virtually. Faculty instructors pre-briefed learners, reviewed the simulation session on Zoom, then conducted subsequent debriefing in a virtual break-out room.

A notable limitation of the virtual platform is that it does not allow learners to engage in hands on assessment and practice compared to in-person sessions. However, it enabled learners to focus on decision making, problem-solving skills and communication with the team members.
